By now it’s no secret that we are driven by our passion for environmentally friendly practices, and so we are constantly on the hunt for eco-friendly products of all kinds to use in our work and personal lives.
So, we have spent some time searching for places to get all your eco-friendly goodies from in Cape Town and we chose three of our favourites to share with you in this article.
What to Look for in Eco-Friendly Products
Although there are three major factors that make a product eco-friendly, we are all individuals who want different things from the products we use.
However, what makes the perfect eco-friendly product is the following:
- Cruelty free – this means that each stage of production of refrains from testing on animals. Although some final products are not tested on animals, sometimes the raw materials used to make the product have been tested on our furry friends which makes them not 100% cruelty free. Most products will have a stamp which indicates that they are cruelty free.
- Packaging – eco-friendly packaging means that it's either biodegradable, recyclable, refillable or the product comes completely free of plastic packaging.
- Ingredients – these products contain natural, non-toxic ingredients which do no harm to the environment during the sourcing stages, as well as after the product is used and flushed down the drain.
During our searches, we have found that many of the bigger companies are turning their focus towards more sustainable options for the everyday products we use that are harmful to the environment.
Needless to say, we are so happy to see that sustainable practices are being adopted by more and more people, from young children to small business owners and big corporate companies alike.
Cosmo Magazine Features Mirror Moon and Other Eco-Friendly Products
For example, one of the world’s biggest magazine names, Cosmopolitan, dedicated an entire section to eco-friendly products in their May Edition and yes, it included Mirror Moon Glitter!
We were so excited about this and extremely proud to be recognised along with some of the country’s biggest cosmetic brands, who have also made it their focus to provide cosmetics that are eco-friendly.

Eco Friendly Products South Africa
We asked ourselves what kind of eco-friendly products we would like to be using and to summarise, we felt that cosmetics, cleaning products and foods were the three main categories to look at.
It would take us forever to go through each individual store and product we found that would fulfil these needs, so we have compiled a short list of places to go and people to see for all your eco-friendly needs.
Eco Friendly Cleaning Products
There really is no shortage of options for eco-friendly cleaning products and some of these can even be found in normal supermarkets.
While we fully support every company who is doing their best, not only to make a difference but also to make their products more accessible, there is one local company that stands out when it comes to eco-friendly cleaning.
This company is called Green Bee Biodegradables and boy oh boy do they take their business seriously.
From fabric softener to dishwashing liquid, dishwasher powder and hand sanitiser, they have every part of household cleaning covered.
Green Bee Biodegradables use renewable plant-based sources which are non-toxic and completely biodegradable.
What makes them unique, is that they are focused on minimising plastic waste by firstly, using mostly glass bottles for their packaging and secondly, any plastic bottle bought from them can be returned and refilled with your next order.
They deliver all around Cape Town and will pick up your empty bottles when they drop off your order.
We are totally impressed with their vision to create eco-friendly products while drastically minimising plastic waste.
Eco Friendly Cosmetics
There is no need to compromise on your daily skincare or beauty regime for the sake of being eco-friendly.
Thankfully, there are so many companies that have us covered with some of the most amazing products!
Once again, among all the eco-friendly cosmetic companies we came across, there was one that stood out to us, and that’s Lush South Africa.
From reusable face cleansing wipes, to mouthwash tablets and package free shampoo and conditioner soap bars, Lush really has revolutionised plastic free beauty products.
They do have other products such as body lotions that come in durable plastic packaging. They don’t offer a refill option but they do provide other really awesome incentives for returning your empty tubs to them so that they can recycle them.
What’s more is that they are 100% against animal testing and practice ethical buying of all their ingredients and raw materials.
That’s not where it ends! One of the most remarkable things about their products is the combination of ingredients. Flowers you’ve never seen, roots you’ve never heard of, fragrances you’ve never smelled before and nuts and seeds to exfoliate.
You can only imagine how amazing these products feel and smell!
Zero Waste Grocery Shopping
We are still waiting for the day that large scale grocery stores will stop packaging their fruits, vegetables and other groceries in unnecessary plastic.
However, there is no guarantee that this will happen any time soon. So, why not pack in your Tupperware containers and glass jars and take a trip to one of the zero waste shops in Cape Town to fill up on your necessities?
There are 5 awesome places in Cape Town that offer zero waste grocery shopping but the one that stood out for us was Shop Zero in Woodstock.
This plastic free grocery store is run by 3 dedicated women who are passionate about living a life of no waste and have made it their goal to educate the community on the importance of waste free living.
What we love about this shop is that they cater for everything ranging from health and fitness to gardening, office, personal care, pets, kitchen, fashion and of course food.
Fill your own containers with just the right amount of oats, seeds, nuts, pasta, legumes, beans, spices, olive oil, super foods, tea and coffee.
Sustainability and ethics are at the forefront of this business and they have everything your eco-friendly heart desires.
Order online from them or visit their store in Woodstock, and while you’re there, have a warm cup of something at their zero-waste café.
